How to Watch IPTV on Stremio: A UK Setup Guide with M3U and EPG
Stremio is best known for on-demand content, but with the right addon it can play your IPTV channels too. Here is how to set it up, and when a dedicated player is the better choice.
By the Digitalby team ·
Stremio and IPTV: worth combining?
Stremio is a free media hub that organises content from addons into one library, with a polished interface across phones, TVs and computers. Many people already use it for legal on-demand sources and want their live TV in the same place. With an M3U/EPG addon, you can do exactly that.
The result is not as full-featured as a dedicated IPTV player, but it is tidy, syncs across devices with your Stremio account, and saves switching between apps.
What you need before you start
- A free Stremio account and the app installed on your device.
- Your M3U playlist link from your IPTV provider.
- Your EPG (XMLTV) link for the TV guide.
- A web browser for the first-time addon configuration (a computer or phone is easiest).
If you are a Digitalby customer, both links are in your welcome email. If you only have Xtream Codes details, message us and we send the M3U version.
Step by step: setting up an M3U/EPG addon
- Sign in to Stremio on a computer or phone and open the Add-ons section.
- Search the community addons for an M3U/EPG or IPTV addon. Several exist; choose one that is actively maintained and has good reviews.
- Select Configure. A web page opens with fields for your links.
- Paste your M3U link into the playlist field and your EPG link into the guide field. Leave other options at their defaults for now.
- Select Install. Stremio adds the addon to your account.
- Open the Discover or Board section and look for the new TV channel catalogue. Your channels appear grouped by category.
Because addons are tied to your Stremio account, you only configure once. Sign in on your TV and the channels are already there.
What works well
- One app for everything: live channels sit alongside the rest of your Stremio library.
- Account sync: set up once, use on every device.
- Clean interface that looks good on a big screen.
- Works in a browser through Stremio Web, handy on a work laptop.
Known limitations
- Basic TV guide: you see now and next, but not the grid-style guide of TiviMate.
- No catch-up or recording in most addons.
- Slower channel switching than a dedicated player, because each channel opens as a separate item.
- Addon reliability: community addons depend on a single developer and can stop working after Stremio updates.
- Privacy: some addons process your playlist on their own server. Read the addon's description and prefer ones that run locally or are open source.
Which devices work best?
- Android TV, Google TV and NVIDIA Shield: the smoothest experience, with Stremio from Google Play.
- Fire Stick: install Stremio via Downloader (see our Fire Stick guide). Works well on the 4K Max.
- Windows and Mac: excellent, with the desktop app.
- iPhone and iPad: usable through the web app; native playback options are more limited.
- Samsung and LG TVs: availability varies by model. A streaming stick is more reliable.
Troubleshooting
No channels appear
Check the M3U link is complete and has not been cut off when pasting. Open it in a browser: it should download a file or show a list starting with #EXTM3U.
Channels show but will not play
Try another stream format option in the addon settings if available, or test the same channel in VLC to rule out the stream itself.
The guide is empty
Confirm the EPG link is the XMLTV one, and give it a few minutes to download the first time.
Is the Stremio IPTV method worth it?
If you already live in Stremio, yes: it is a neat way to add live UK channels without another app. If live TV is your main use, a dedicated player gives you a better guide, faster switching and catch-up. Our best IPTV players guide covers the alternatives.
Summary
Configure an M3U/EPG addon once with your playlist and guide links, and your channels follow you to every device signed into Stremio. To test it with UK channels first, request the 24-hour IPTV free trial, or see all the ways to watch in our IPTV setup guide.
