How to Jailbreak a Firestick in 2026: A Step-by-Step UK Guide

"Jailbreaking" a Fire Stick simply means allowing it to install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. It takes about five minutes, needs no computer and can be undone with a reset.

By the Digitalby team ·

What jailbreaking a Fire Stick actually means

Unlike an iPhone jailbreak, there is no hacking involved. Amazon blocks apps from outside its own store by default, but it includes a setting that lets you install them yourself, a process called sideloading. Turning that setting on is what people mean by "jailbreak". Your Fire Stick keeps receiving Amazon updates and all your existing apps keep working.

The main reason people do it is to install IPTV player apps such as TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro, which are not in the Amazon Appstore. It also opens up useful tools such as file managers and alternative launchers.

What you need before you start

  • Any Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K, 4K Max or Fire TV Cube, connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Your Fire TV remote. A phone running the Fire TV app also works as a keyboard.
  • The download code or official address for the app you want to install.
  • About five minutes.

Step 1: Install the Downloader app

  1. From the home screen, select the search icon (the magnifying glass) or say "Downloader" into the voice remote.
  2. Choose Downloader by AFTVnews, the orange app with the arrow icon.
  3. Select Get or Download and wait for it to install. Do not open it yet.

Step 2: Turn on Developer Options

On newer Fire OS versions, Developer Options is hidden. To reveal it:

  1. Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then About.
  2. Highlight your device name (for example "Fire TV Stick 4K Max") and press the select button seven times.
  3. A message confirms "You are now a developer". Press back once and Developer Options appears in the My Fire TV menu.

Step 3: Allow apps from unknown sources

  1. Open Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options.
  2. On older models, switch Apps from Unknown Sources to On.
  3. On newer models, choose Install unknown apps, find Downloader and switch it to On.
  4. Accept the warning. It is a standard notice that you are installing apps from outside the store.

Step 4: Install your app with Downloader

  1. Open Downloader and allow it to access files when asked.
  2. In the address box, type the download code or official URL for the app. Downloader codes are short numbers that save typing long addresses.
  3. Select Go. The file downloads and the installer opens.
  4. Select Install, then Done.
  5. When Downloader asks, choose Delete to remove the installer file and free up storage. The app stays installed.

Digitalby customers receive the codes for the recommended players with their login, so this step is copy and type.

Step 5: Add your IPTV login

Open the new player and choose the Xtream Codes option. Enter any name, then the server URL, username and password from your welcome email. Within a minute the channel list and TV guide load. Our Fire Stick IPTV setup guide walks through this screen by screen.

Finding sideloaded apps

Sideloaded apps do not appear on the home screen row automatically. Hold the Home button, choose Apps, and scroll to the end of the list. Highlight the app, press the menu button (three lines) and choose Move to front so it sits in your top row.

Keeping sideloaded apps updated

Amazon does not update apps that did not come from its store. Most IPTV players show an update prompt inside the app when a new version is out. If not, repeat Step 4 with the latest download; installing over the top keeps your settings and login.

What to install after jailbreaking

  • An IPTV player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. See our best IPTV players guide.
  • A file manager, useful for clearing old installer files.
  • An internet speed test app, to check your connection when streams struggle.

Troubleshooting

Developer Options will not appear

Make sure you are pressing select on the device name itself in the About screen, not on another line. Seven presses in a row is needed.

"App not installed" error

Usually storage is full. Uninstall apps you do not use and clear the cache of large apps under Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications.

Downloader cannot open the address

Check the code or URL for typing mistakes, and that your Fire Stick has internet access by opening any other streaming app.

The Fire Stick feels slow

Older Fire Sticks have limited memory. Close apps you are not using, restart the stick from Settings, My Fire TV, Restart, and keep only the apps you need.

Is jailbreaking a Firestick legal in the UK?

Yes. Changing a setting on a device you own and installing apps from developers is legal. What matters is the content you watch: use licensed services and apps, and stay within the law. Avoid any "fully loaded" stick sold with free premium channels, as those are both unlawful and a common source of malware.

Undoing it

To reverse everything, switch the unknown sources setting back off, or reset the stick under Settings, My Fire TV, Reset to Factory Defaults. That wipes all apps and returns it to how it came out of the box.

Next steps

With sideloading on, you are a few minutes from watching. Request the IPTV free trial to test on your Fire Stick, or choose an IPTV UK subscription and we send your login and the app codes together.
